The Idea

The Colonies is a master planned traditional neighborhood development rich with architectural diversity and a unique system of parks. European influences can be seen in many of the homes throughout the neighborhood mixed with features from Amarillo's favorite neighborhoods. From the high profile lots commonly seen in the Olsen park area to the landscapes boulevards of Bivins, the mini-parks and tree lined streets of Wolflin to the popular private cul-de-sac clusters found in Sleepy Hollow. All of these features culminate to a Majestic 50 foot clock tower located within an Oldham circle style roundabout parkway.

The Plan

The Colonies is comprised of a total of 1,200 future home sites with a 40-acre school site for two future schools located within the center of the neighborhood. The concept of the Colonies was years in the making. Many neighborhoods were studied throughout the country to determine what works and what doesn't. One of the unique qualities of The Colonies is its focus on being "pedestrian friendly". Unlike many post World War II neighborhoods The Colonies is designed for people not cars. This can be seen in the narrower streets and additional walkways and green spaces.

The Schools

The Colonies of Amarillo is an Amarillo Independent School District Neighborhood. Area schools include: Sleepy Hollow Elementary, Bonham MIddle School and Amarillo High School. Also in the area is a premier College Prep School, Acesnsion Academy.

The Land Use

One of the most important considerations for any neighborhood plan is the land use plan. Careful planning has gone in to considering how the overall neighborhood plan will flow and function once complete. All of the streets within The Colonies follow logical patterns and don't meander just for the sake of meandering. Ultimately The Colonies will provide neighborhood services and shops that will be accessible from within the neighborhood. These services will be an integral part of the community and will be architecturally controlled for continuity. Predominately The Colonies features standard single family detached uses however mixed-use development is also proposed for this neighborhood. Multi-family dwellings located above retail shops are a common feature in many metropolitan areas and is a part of the overall plan for the Colonies. The aging baby boomer population tends to want to down size and have reduced yard maintenance once they become "empty nesters". Garden Homes have been strategically incorporated into the plan to allow for this growing need.
